Policy Workshop: Public Policies to Boost Energy Renewal of Buildings

As part of the groundbreaking SUREFIT project, ISQ recently hosted a pivotal debate on energy renovation and the decarbonization of buildings in Portugal. The event kicked off with an enlightening presentation by Sérgio Tadeu, who showcased the cutting-edge technologies developed during the project and the remarkable progress in demonstration buildings. He also delved into the hurdles faced by innovative solutions in the quest for competitiveness.

The event featured prominent national policymakers, including Ricardo Aguiar (DGEG – General Directorate of Energy and Geology), Rui Fragoso (ADENE – Energy Agency), and Hélder Gonçalves (LNEG – Energy Laboratory). They emphasized the significant impact of transposing European conventions (EPBD, RED III, EED) and the crucial role of public policies in addressing climate change.

Eduardo Maldonado (Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto), José Bernardo Dias (Smart Energy LAB), and Vanessa Tavares (BuiltColab) shed light on the obstacles related to circularity in construction, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.

The workshop concluded with a thought-provoking round table discussion led by João Safara (ISQ Group Administrator) and attended by Rita Moura (PTPC – Portuguese Construction Technology Platform), leaving attendees inspired and ready to tackle the future of sustainable building practices.
